REVIEWS / NEWS

Josep Vicent made his debut as the new Principal Conductor of the Argovia Philharmonic with a vibrant and captivating performance.

The season-opening concert took place at the Alte Reithalle in Aarau, launching the 2025/26 program “Célébration.” It was the orchestra’s first opportunity to present Vicent to its audience, and he immediately won their hearts with his music, energy, and approachable style.

The evening featured Latvian violinist Kristine Balanas as soloist in the Violin Concerto by Austrian-Hungarian composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Her performance combined dazzling virtuosity with lyrical sensitivity and expressive depth, earning warm and sustained applause.

Vicent, who describes himself as a conductor who offers “more inspiration than instruction,” succeeded in bringing the orchestra together while conveying freshness and genuine enthusiasm. Critics praised his communicative flair and expressive gestures, which infused both the musicians and the audience with energy.

The program also included Igor Stravinsky’s symphonic suite The Firebird, which the orchestra performed with remarkable brilliance under Vicent’s direction.

The enthusiastic audience demanded encores, and the evening ended in a true spirit of celebration and connection between musicians and listeners.

Two unforgettable concerts, sold-out performances at the opening of the Ljubljana Festival

Josep Vicent opened the prestigious Ljubljana Festival with a stunning production of The Creation by Haydn, alongside Carlus Padrissa, ADDA·Simfònica, La Fura dels Baus and the Slovenian Philharmonic Choir. Just a few days later, he returned to the stage with another resounding success: El Amor Brujo, in a powerful blend of classical music and flamenco, featuring the extraordinary voice of Ginesa Ortega and the passionate dance of David Romero.

True to his unique artistic signature, Josep Vicent surprised audiences with a vibrant and eclectic program that also included works by Bernstein, Falla, Shostakovich and Rimsky-Korsakov. The renowned Cankarjev Dom was packed to capacity on both nights—electrifying “sold outs” crowned with standing ovations that lasted several unforgettable minutes.

Thank you, Slovenia.
